Phoenix’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix—Released May 25, 2009—4th Studio Album
Words of SPIN: “These arch Frenchmen make precision-tooled pop that somehow retains a sens of urgency and playfulness—an impressive balancing act consistently slam-dunked by effortlessly ingratiating choruses.”
Words of Mine: Besides having the best album name ever, this record is as explosive as their new American following. Yes, it’s pop music, but it’s extraordinary and meticulously constructed. Honestly, the best thing about Phoenix is that they write catchy, nostalgic songs that make you want to dance your heart out.
Listen to…“Rome” [Mars’ perfect vocals bleed with emotion on this track (I’m a sucker for emotion-filled songs) but it’s the synth-drum relationship that is the foundation of this band, which makes this song so powerful.
SPIN Rating: 7/10
My Rating: I discovered Phoenix shortly before this album was released and I thought they were great then, but the energy, and the beautiful excitement of this album casts a shadow over all their others.
