Arctic Monkeys’ Humbug—Released August 25, 2009—3rd Studio Album
Words of SPIN: “…who take a decidedly different direction on Humbug and rarely settle into it comfortably.”
“Reportedly, the band listened to lots of Hendrix—and there is more mood (and keyboards) here than ever before. The band’s oft-mentioned hip-hop influence is nowhere to be found.”
Words of Mine: Humbug is everything we weren’t expecting from the Arctic Monkeys; it’s eerie, breathy and sultry, and after repeat listens (setting aside that this is no longer the Monkeys I knew) I found it quite refreshing. Yes, they’ve lost their hip-hop feel, but they are done telling the world that they are pissed off teenagers, because they aren’t anymore. They are showing us something entirely different, something they may be experiencing now in life—a menacing sadness.
Listen to… “The Jeweller’s Hands” [It’s the last song on the album, so the ending drags on, but I found it to be the darkest, and most beautiful on the album].
SPIN Rating: 6/10
My Rating: Let this album grow on you. It’s worth it. There is so much more to these boys, and they are showing you it.
